Description: Nick discovers he has entered the afterlife and is condemned to eternal damnation due to his past crimes. To atone, he is enlisted into the R.I.P.D. (Rest In Peace Department), an organization tasked with capturing rogue souls known as “Deados.” These monstrous entities disguise themselves as humans, threatening both the mortal world and the secrecy of the afterlife. Nick is paired with Rocephus “Roy” Pulsipher, a former U.S. Marshal and Civil War soldier.
During a visit to the cemetery to observe Nick’s funeral, he tries to approach his wife, Julia, but she doesn’t recognize him. Roy explains that R.I.P.D. officers are given new appearances to maintain the masquerade, with Nick posing as an elderly Asian man and Roy as a blonde woman.
On their first mission, Nick and Roy interrogate a suspected Deado and uncover evidence similar to the gold Nick had stolen in life. After tracking down Nick’s former accomplice, Hayes, they confront a Deado who transforms into a monstrous creature, causing chaos in the city and alerting the mortal population.
Upon returning to R.I.P.D. headquarters, Chief Mildred Proctor reveals that the gold fragments are part of an ancient artifact called the Staff of Jericho, capable of reversing the flow of souls between Earth and the afterlife. However, Roy and Nick are removed from the case and suspended due to the public exposure caused by the monster’s rampage.
