Description: “Puthiya Niyamam” (translated as “New Law”) is a 2016 Indian Malayalam-language crime drama film written and directed by A. K. Sajan. The plot revolves around Louis Pothen (played by Mammootty), a well-known part-time television film critic, artist, and divorce lawyer, who also appears on a live TV show called “Kathrika.” His wife, Vasuki Iyer (Nayanthara), is a Kathakali artist, and they live with their school-going daughter, Chintha. Due to their inter-religious marriage, they reside away from their parents. One fateful day, Vasuki is assaulted by her two neighbors, Aryan and Sudeep, engineering students whom she regarded as brothers, and Pachai, a man who works in their building. Overwhelmed by the trauma, Vasuki withdraws emotionally, changes her behavior, and even contemplates suicide. However, she eventually decides that her attackers must face the consequences instead.
After a Kathakali performance, she receives praise from the new police commissioner, Jeena Bhai. Vasuki retrieves Jeena’s phone number from Louis’s phone and reaches out to her, sharing her harrowing experience. With Jeena’s guidance, Vasuki takes matters into her own hands and eliminates her assailants one by one. Once justice is served, Jeena cuts ties with Vasuki, advising her never to contact her again. Later, it is revealed that Louis learned about the assault from Swami, a neighbor who witnessed the crime but was unable to intervene due to his age and distance. Swami informs Louis of the incident, adding another layer of emotional complexity to the story.
