**Storyline:**
The concept for *Prooi* (*Prey*) originated around the year 2000. Dick Maas, known for thrillers like *De Lift*, *Amsterdamned*, *Sint*, and *Quiz*, envisioned creating a thriller centered around a lion escaping into a big city. Initially, Maas considered Berlin as the setting but later shifted the location to Amsterdam, which had been the backdrop for his earlier film *Amsterdamned*. He developed individual scenes where the escaped lion wreaks havoc in the city and later combined them into a cohesive storyline.
In December 2014, Maas announced his plans for the film and secured funding from the Netherlands Film Fund. To bring the lion to life, Maas collaborated with Erik-Jan de Boer, who had previously won an Oscar for his animation work on the tiger in *Life of Pi* (2012). However, such advanced animation techniques proved too costly for this Dutch production. Instead, the team opted for a mix of animatronics and limited computer animation, produced by Hectic Electric. The film ultimately included 500 special effects shots.
In March 2015, Maas cast relatively unknown actors Sophie van Winden and Julian Looman in the lead roles, with the film’s budget set at 3 million euros. Filming began in May 2015, though it faced challenges due to Amsterdam’s strict regulations. For instance, night shoots in Frankendael were nearly canceled due to a nesting heron, and nighttime filming in the city was restricted to using electric scooters to avoid noise complaints. Despite these obstacles, Maas received extensive support from the GVB, including the use of a tram for filming. The project stayed within budget, but Maas and producer Dave Schram had to forgo their salaries.
In September 2015, the film was surprisingly rated for viewers aged 16 and older by the Dutch film board, a decision Maas described as overly restrictive.
