Description: “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” (2017) tells the story of William Moulton Marston, the creator of Wonder Woman, and his unconventional life. The narrative unfolds through flashbacks during a 1945 testimony Marston gives to the Child Study Association of America.
In 1928, William and his wife Elizabeth are professors working at Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, conducting research on human behavior and developing the lie detector. They hire Olive Byrne, one of William’s students, as their research assistant. Together, they explore William’s DISC theory of human interactions and grow closer emotionally. When the lie detector reveals their mutual feelings, the three enter into a polyamorous relationship.
Their relationship leads to scandal, and the Marstons are dismissed from the university. Olive, now pregnant, moves in with the couple, and they build a life together, creating a fabricated story to conceal the true nature of their relationship. By 1934, Olive has two sons, and Elizabeth has one son and a daughter named after Olive. They raise their children together, with Elizabeth supporting the family as a secretary while Olive manages the household.
In 1940, William discovers fetish art and comics in a New York lingerie shop, which inspires him to create Wonder Woman. Elizabeth, initially skeptical, eventually supports the idea, especially after Olive models a costume that becomes the prototype for the iconic superhero. Their lives and creative endeavors challenge societal norms, leaving a lasting impact on popular culture.
