In the present day, sisters Gillian and Sally Owens, orphaned as children, are raised by their aunts, Frances and Jet. Sally possesses strong magical abilities, while Gillian relies on charm and persuasion. After witnessing their aunts cast a love spell, Gillian pursues romance, while Sally casts a spell to protect her heart. Gillian moves to Los Angeles, and Sally marries Michael, an apple salesman. Together, they open a botanical shop named Verbena and raise their daughters, Kylie and Antonia. Tragedy strikes when Michael dies in an accident, forcing Sally and her daughters to return to the Owens family home.
Meanwhile, Gillian becomes romantically involved with Jimmy Angelov, who turns out to be abusive. Sally rescues Gillian from Jimmy, but he takes them hostage. In self-defense, Sally poisons Jimmy, accidentally killing him. The sisters attempt to resurrect him using forbidden magic, but he becomes violent upon revival. Sally kills him again, and they bury his body in their garden.
The story takes a turn when state investigator Gary Hallett arrives, searching for Jimmy, who is revealed to be a serial killer. The film explores themes of love, family, and the consequences of magic, blending drama, romance, and supernatural elements.
