I’d like to start by expressing my gratitude to One Bandit Productions and Director Michael Butts for providing early access to his debut feature-length film, *Potter’s Ground*. Written by Scott Crain, this Western/Crime/Thriller is set during the final stages of the Civil War. The story follows a group of former Confederate outlaws, led by soon-to-be father Sully (Isaiah Stratton). The team, including the tough Lex (played by Crain) and Native American “Ninekiller” (Loren Anthony), is tasked with a perilous mission to retrieve a three-piece ancient treasure. The cast also features Todd Bush, Katharine Franco, Leslie Mills, James J. Fuertes, and Lexi Janicek.
A few months ago, I came across the trailer for this new Western on a filmmakers’ group page, and it instantly caught my attention. After temporarily forgetting about it, I noticed Michael promoting the film’s upcoming digital and physical release (scheduled for June, if I recall correctly). I decided to request a screener, and the rest is history.
*Potter’s Ground* stands out as a DIY-style independent film, though its polished execution belies its indie roots. The central theme explores how our past inevitably intersects with our present, as seen through the journey of the protagonist, Sully. Crain’s screenplay is uniquely structured, presenting the story in a mostly linear timeline but using unconventional chapter titles derived from character dialogue rather than locations or times. This creative approach adds a distinctive flair to the film.
