Description: In 1918, near the end of World War I, German soldier Thomas is presumed dead after an artillery blast and thrown into a mass grave. An older soldier, noticing he is still breathing, rescues him from a flooded trench. During the explosion, Thomas experiences a surreal vision of a girl urging him to return to life. Six months later, he becomes a unique photographer, offering grieving families a chance to create lasting memories by taking portraits of the living alongside their deceased loved ones, whom he prepares and poses. His hallucination appears to take form in the mysterious figure of Anna, a ten-year-old orphan girl.
Thomas temporarily leaves his traveling group to visit Anna’s Hungarian village, invited by its residents. There, the frozen ground halts the burial of numerous pandemic victims. The photographer begins his work, staying with the local teacher Marcsa, but the atmosphere grows tense and paranoid amid the dire circumstances. The villagers claim, “There are more dead than alive, and the land is haunted by ghosts.”
Thomas and Anna delve deeper into exploring the boundary between life and death, but their situation deteriorates as dangers escalate. Strange occurrences include barking dogs, eerie moans, sinister shadows, oozing walls, invisible attacks, deceptions, and various tactics to detect ghostly presences, such as ropes, bells, flour on the ground, torch marks, photographic plates, and phonographs.
