Description: In the 2022 movie *Poker Face*, a wealthy man facing a grim future gathers his closest friends for a high-stakes poker night, unaware of the dramatic events that will unfold. Directed by and starring Russell Crowe, the film attempts to blend sleek B-movie thrills with a reflective exploration of regret. However, its predictable elements fail to fully engage. Crowe, portraying a troubled billionaire, brings gravitas to the role, but the twists and revelations ultimately fall short.
The story follows Jake, a tech mogul who transformed online poker software into a surveillance tool sold to governments. A lifelong gambler, Jake views the poker table as a metaphor for life. After receiving unsettling news from his doctor, he organizes an extravagant reunion with his old friends, including his alcoholic companion Mikey (Liam Hemsworth) and loyal business partner Drew (RZA). While Jake has surprises planned for his guests, he remains oblivious to a group of thieves plotting to steal his priceless art collection.
*Poker Face* premiered at the Rome Film Festival and hit US theaters on November 16. Though Crowe’s star power has diminished, the film may appeal to his dedicated fans, though a swift transition to streaming platforms is expected. Crowe’s second directorial effort diverges from his debut *The Water Diviner*, offering a mix of heist thrills and a study of fractured male friendships. Unfortunately, the film overestimates the allure of its protagonist, whose brooding narration fails to fully convey the depth of his inner turmoil.
