Description: Narendra Modi began his journey as a humble tea seller. At a young age, he left his home, rejecting his marriage to Jashodaben Modi, to embrace the life of a Sanyasi in the Himalayas. After his spiritual journey, he returned to Gujarat, joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and later became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980, following the end of the State of Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975. He also led the Ekta Yatra, a movement aimed at uniting Indians, and, alongside the Indian Army and others, fought against terrorists to plant the national flag at Lal Chowk.
Modi worked tirelessly across Gujarat, helping people and gaining their support. With the collective efforts of the people and BJP members, the party won the Gujarat Chief Minister elections, and Keshubhai Patel assumed the role. However, Patel grew insecure as Modi’s popularity soared and pressured BJP leaders—Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L. K. Advani, and Murli Manohar Joshi—to transfer Modi elsewhere. Heartbroken, Modi resigned, but his resignation was rejected due to his significant contributions to the party. He was then sent to New Delhi for organizational work before returning to Gujarat just before the devastating 2001 earthquake.
After the earthquake, Modi replaced Keshubhai Patel as Chief Minister and faced the 2002 Gujarat riots shortly after his election. Despite seeking assistance from other state governments and the federal government, he received little help. Through careful planning and strict enforcement, he managed to end the violence. Peace was restored, and reconstruction and development efforts began. New roads were built, employment opportunities were created, and both Indian and international companies invested in Gujarat. Corruption was curbed, security was strengthened, and Gujarat flourished under Modi’s leadership.
Recognizing his achievements, the BJP leadership selected him as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2014 Indian general election.
