**Storyline:**
In 1967, Chris Taylor, a U.S. Army volunteer, arrives in South Vietnam and is assigned to an infantry platoon of the 25th Infantry Division near the Cambodian border. Although the platoon is officially led by the inexperienced Lieutenant Wolfe, the soldiers primarily follow two older and more experienced sergeants: the hardened and cynical Sergeant Barnes and the idealistic and reasonable Sergeant Elias.
Chris is quickly sent on a night ambush mission with Barnes, Elias, and veteran soldiers to confront a North Vietnamese army force. The enemy sneaks close to the sleeping Americans, leading to a brief firefight. During the encounter, Chris’s fellow recruit Gardner is killed, and Chris is lightly wounded. After recovering, Chris bonds with Elias and his group of marijuana-smoking soldiers while keeping his distance from Barnes and his more aggressive followers.
During a patrol on New Year’s Day 1968, three soldiers are killed by bamboo spike traps and unseen attackers. Tensions rise further when the platoon discovers an enemy supply cache in a nearby village. Barnes interrogates the village chief, accusing the villagers of aiding the NVA. In a moment of rage, Barnes kills the chief’s wife after she shouts at him. Elias confronts Barnes over the killing, leading to a physical altercation that Wolfe breaks up. The platoon is ordered to destroy the supplies and burn the village, revealing hidden munitions as the homes explode. Chris later intervenes to stop a gang rape of two girls by Barnes’ men.
Upon returning to base, Captain Harris, the company commander, warns of potential court-martial proceedings if illegal killings are uncovered, leaving Barnes concerned about Elias testifying against him. On their next patrol, the platoon is ambushed and pinned down in a firefight, resulting in multiple casualties.
