Description: In 2029, aboard the United States Air Force space station Oberon, Leo Davidson collaborates closely with primates trained for space missions. His favorite chimpanzee co-worker, Pericles, pilots a small space pod into a deadly electromagnetic storm, disappearing within it. Leo follows in another pod, losing contact with Oberon. He emerges in the year 5021 A.D., crash-landing on a planet named Ashlar, where humanoid apes rule. These apes speak English, use domesticated horses for transportation, and enslave humans.
Leo encounters Ari, a female chimpanzee who opposes the mistreatment of humans. She purchases Leo and a female slave named Daena to serve in her father Senator Sandar’s household. Leo escapes, freeing other humans. Limbo, an orangutan trader in captured humans, is taken prisoner to keep him silent. General Thade and Colonel Attar lead ape warriors to hunt the humans.
Leo discovers Calima, a forbidden temple revered by the apes as the holy site of Semos, their first god. Calima is revealed to be the ancient remains of the Oberon, which crashed on the planet thousands of years earlier. The name “Calima” derives from the sign “CAution LIve aniMAls,” with only specific letters visible. Leo realizes the electromagnetic storm pushed him forward in time, while the Oberon, searching for him, crashed long before.
