Description: Pinocchio is everywhere this year. Following Matteo Garrone’s Italian adaptation three years ago, two new versions of the wooden boy’s story are set to release in late 2022. In November, Guillermo del Toro, known for *The Shape of Water* and *Pan’s Labyrinth*, will present his long-awaited take on the classic fairytale. However, before that, Disney+ will release its own live-action/CGI hybrid remake, continuing its trend of turning beloved animated classics into modernized versions.
This remake, like others such as *Dumbo*, *Aladdin*, and *The Lion King*, features a star-studded cast and an acclaimed director. Tom Hanks, Luke Evans, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt play iconic roles, while Robert Zemeckis, director of *Who Framed Roger Rabbit*, takes the helm. Despite the impressive lineup, the film struggles to surpass the original 1940 animated masterpiece, offering little to justify its existence.
The screenplay, written by Zemeckis and Chris Weitz, largely follows the 1940 film’s narrative, which itself deviates from Carlo Collodi’s original Italian story. Jiminy Cricket (voiced by Gordon-Levitt) serves as the story’s guide, leading viewers from the Blue Fairy’s (Cynthia Erivo) magical creation of Pinocchio to the surreal journey of Pleasure Island, complete with donkey transformations and a whale encounter. The film introduces updates, including a new character, Sabina, a female puppet owned by Fabiana, and a slightly more ambiguous ending.
This version offers a multilingual experience with English, Hindi, and other audio options in a single file.
