Description: “Phoring” (2013) is a Bengali film that tells the story of a teenage boy, Phoring (meaning “Grasshopper”), who grows up in a remote town in North Bengal. The town, surrounded by the lush Dooars countryside, struggles to survive after the closure of a local factory. Phoring, maladjusted and a self-perceived loser, battles inner voices he refers to as God. His life takes a turn when a new teacher, Doel, arrives at his school and introduces him to new perspectives. Phoring begins to believe in the reality of his experiences.
Doel invites Phoring to her home to nurture his creative abilities and gifts him a cell phone for his birthday. During the celebration, Phoring records a video of Doel dancing. This video is later leaked by one of Phoring’s classmates, Lattu, leading to Doel being harassed by older teachers. Phoring’s mother warns Doel to stay away from him, causing her to distance herself from Phoring, who is subsequently suspended from school.
Phoring’s life becomes further complicated when Doel’s brother moves into her house. Phoring and his friend stumble upon firearms and a transceiver in the abandoned factory, leading to Doel and her brother’s sudden disappearance under suspicious circumstances. The police investigate, linking them to terrorism.
Determined to find Doel, Phoring travels to Kolkata, where he works in a Muslim-owned hotel to survive. Eventually, he finds Doel in jail. Before parting, she promises to write to him, and Phoring returns to his hometown. However, the mystery around Doel and her brother’s disappearance remains unresolved.
