At his new job, Louis is deeply affected by the tragic death of Victor Pascow, a student he fails to save after a vehicle accident. Later, Louis has a vivid dream in which Victor warns him not to go beyond the pet cemetery. He wakes up to find mud on his feet and sheets, hinting that the experience was more than just a dream.
On Halloween, Church is killed by a truck. Their neighbor, Jud Crandall, takes Louis beyond the pet cemetery to an ancient burial ground to bury the cat. Shockingly, Church returns the next day, but behaves violently and unnaturally. Jud explains that the burial ground has the power to resurrect the dead, though the returned beings are often altered and malevolent, influenced by a spirit known as the Wendigo. After Church attacks Gage, Louis tries to euthanize him but ultimately sets him free.
Tragedy strikes again when Ellie is killed by a tanker truck during her birthday party. Overwhelmed by grief, Rachel and Gage leave town to stay with Rachel’s parents. Despite Jud’s stern warning that “sometimes dead is better,” and further caution from Victor’s spirit, Louis succumbs to his anguish and decides to use the burial ground to bring Ellie back to life. He buries her in the cursed ground, unknowingly setting the stage for horrifying consequences.
The film explores themes of loss, grief, and the dangers of tampering with the natural order.
