Description: Seth, an extremely introverted man, works at an Animal Control department. He becomes obsessed with Holly, a waitress and former high school classmate, after seeing her write in her journal on the bus. Seeking advice, Seth turns to security guard Nate, who encourages him to be confident and approach her. Seth extensively researches Holly’s online profiles but is rejected when he tries to ask her out. Meanwhile, Holly discusses the encounter with her friend Claire and receives a drunken call from her ex-boyfriend, Eric, who had cheated on her.
The next day, Holly receives a bouquet of roses at work, assuming they are from Eric. She visits the bar where he works, but Seth confronts her instead. A physical altercation ensues, and Eric beats Seth up. However, Seth manages to steal Holly’s journal. Over the following days, Seth immerses himself in the journal’s contents, leading to a decline in his work performance. He discovers a trapdoor in an abandoned section of the animal shelter and constructs a steel cage. Seth then follows Holly home, breaks into her apartment, and kidnaps her.
When Holly wakes up in the cage, she vows to survive, speaking to an image of Claire. Seth reveals his love for Holly and claims he has imprisoned her to “save” her. He mentions hearing her speak in both her own voice and Claire’s in the past. Seth then uncovers Holly’s dark secret: she discovered Eric had slept with Claire and confronted her during a car ride. In a fit of anger, Holly accelerated the car until it collided with a truck. Although injured, Claire survived the crash, but Holly killed her by stabbing her with a glass shard.
