The story follows Anne, a 27-year-old spinster, who is marginalized in her family and society despite being the most intelligent and sensible member. Her father, Sir Walter (Richard E. Grant), is vain and foolish, as are her sisters, Elizabeth (Yolanda Kettle) and Mary (Mia McKenna-Bruce). Eight years prior, Anne was in love with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), a naval officer who proposed to her. However, she was persuaded to reject him due to his lack of wealth and status. Wentworth has since returned from sea as a wealthy man, and Anne now regrets her decision. The central question becomes: does he still love her?
The film attempts to explore themes of shyness, pride, and longing but falls short in conveying genuine emotion. The lack of chemistry between the lead actors, Dakota Johnson and Cosmo Jarvis, is evident. Director Carrie Cracknell’s choice to adopt a rom-com tone further detracts from the depth of the story. Anne’s quirky behavior—drinking wine from the bottle, wearing a French beret, and breaking the fourth wall—feels out of place and diminishes her character’s complexity.
The climactic moment, where Wentworth writes a heartfelt letter, fails to evoke the intended emotional impact. Instead of being captivating, the film becomes dull and uninspiring. At one hour and 49 minutes, it may feel like an unnecessarily long and tedious experience.
Persuasion 2022 is a poorly executed adaptation that lacks the charm and depth of its source material. It’s neither entertainingly bad nor genuinely good—it’s simply boring.
