Description: Pee Mak (2013) is a Thai film set in mid-19th century Siam during the reign of King Mongkut and the Rattanakosin Dynasty, a time marked by conflicts with neighboring kingdoms. The story follows Mak, played by Mario Maurer, who is drafted to fight in a war, leaving his pregnant wife Nak, portrayed by Davika Hoorne, behind in Phra Khanong, near Bangkok. During the war, Mak is injured and sent to a medical camp, where he befriends four soldiers—Ter, Puak, Shin, and Aey—after saving their lives.
Meanwhile, Nak struggles alone during childbirth, too weak to call for help. Tragically, she dies in labor, and rumors spread through the village that her spirit haunts their home. Villagers claim to hear her singing lullabies to her baby, filling the community with fear.
When Mak and his friends return to Phra Khanong, they find the town eerily silent. They stay at Mak and Nak’s house overnight, where Mak introduces Nak to his companions. The next day, the group visits the village market, but the fearful villagers refuse to interact with them. A drunk villager tries to warn Mak about Nak’s fate but is silenced.
As his friends discuss the rumors, Shin notices that Mak’s house is in ruins, with neglected maintenance and broken stairs. The unsettling events suggest that Nak’s ghost may indeed be present, leaving the group to confront the haunting truth.
