Porter, a skilled thief and former U.S. Marine, finds himself betrayed and left for dead after being shot twice during a heist gone wrong. Broke and determined, Porter resorts to small thefts and cons to gather enough resources—cash, a suit, a revolver, and meals—before setting out to track down his estranged wife, Lynn, and his former partner, Val Resnick.
In flashbacks, it is revealed that Porter was betrayed after a $140,000 heist from a Chinese Triad. Resnick manipulated Lynn into believing Porter was having an affair with a high-end call girl named Rosie. Consumed by jealousy, Lynn shot Porter, and together with Resnick, they left him for dead. Resnick used the stolen money to pay off his debt to a local crime syndicate known as “the Outfit.”
Porter’s first step is to find Lynn, driven by a sense of loyalty to their marriage. However, he discovers she has fallen into heroin addiction, overwhelmed by guilt. In an attempt to help her recover, Porter confines her and confiscates her drugs, but she overdoses the next morning using a hidden stash. Convinced that Resnick funded her addiction, Porter interrogates her drug dealer, who leads him to Resnick’s associate, Arthur Stegman—a shady supplier of drugs, weapons, and muscle for low-level criminals.
When Porter confronts Stegman, he encounters two corrupt detectives, Hicks and Leary, who demand a share of the $70,000 he seeks. Using information from Stegman, Porter reaches out to Rosie, who is now connected to the Outfit. Rosie agrees to help, revealing lingering feelings for Porter from their past, when he served as her bodyguard. Together, they reflect on their missed opportunity for a deeper relationship, hindered by their respective careers in crime.
Payback (1999) is a gritty tale of betrayal, revenge, and redemption, as Porter navigates the criminal underworld to settle scores and reclaim what was stolen from him.
