Description: The 2016 movie “Passengers” depicts the journey of the Avalon, a sleeper ship transporting 5,000 colonists and 258 crew members in hibernation pods from Earth to Homestead II, a planet 120 years away. After 30 years, an asteroid collision damages the ship, causing a malfunction that prematurely awakens mechanical engineer James “Jim” Preston 90 years early. Isolated for a year with only an android barman named Arthur for company, Jim becomes despondent and considers suicide until he notices Aurora Lane, a woman in her pod. Viewing her video interview, Jim becomes enamored and, after a moral struggle, decides to awaken her, letting her believe it was an accident.
Aurora, devastated by the realization she must live out her life on the ship, initially tries to re-enter hibernation but eventually resigns to her fate. Over time, she and Jim grow closer and fall in love. However, when Arthur reveals the truth about her awakening, Aurora is furious and cuts off contact with Jim.
Later, another pod failure awakens Gus Mancuso, a deck chief officer. Using his access codes, Gus, Jim, and Aurora discover critical system failures threatening the ship’s survival. While attempting repairs, Gus falls critically ill, leaving Jim and Aurora to confront the challenges ahead.
The film explores themes of isolation, morality, and survival in a futuristic setting.
