The story is set in the fictional town of Blithe Hollow, Massachusetts. It follows Norman Babcock, an 11-year-old boy with the unique ability to communicate with the dead, including his late grandmother and various ghosts in the town. Despite his gift, Norman is largely misunderstood and ridiculed by his peers, as well as emotionally isolated from his family. His only true friend is Neil Downe, a boy who is also bullied and finds solace in their shared experiences.
One day, Norman’s eccentric and estranged uncle, Mr. Prenderghast, warns him of an urgent ritual he must perform to protect the town. Shortly after this encounter, Mr. Prenderghast dies of a heart attack. During a school play commemorating the town’s historical witch trials, Norman experiences a terrifying vision of the past, leading to embarrassment and a heated argument with his father, Perry, who later grounds him.
The next day, Norman is visited by Mr. Prenderghast’s ghost, who instructs him to complete the ritual using a specific book before sundown. After agreeing, Norman retrieves the book from his uncle’s house and heads to the graves of those cursed by the witch. However, he discovers the book is filled with fairy tales. When the school bully, Alvin, interrupts him, Norman fails to read the story in time, unleashing a ghostly storm that awakens the cursed dead as zombies. Norman, along with his sister Courtney, Neil, and Neil’s brother Mitch, must now face the chaos brought upon the town.
The film is a blend of adventure, humor, and heartfelt moments, exploring themes of bravery, acceptance, and the importance of being true to oneself.
