**Plot Summary:**
Henri Charrière, portrayed by Steve McQueen, is a safecracker known as “Papillon” due to the butterfly tattoo on his chest. In 1933 France, he is falsely convicted of murdering a pimp and sentenced to life imprisonment in the penal system of French Guiana. During the journey, he meets Louis Dega, played by Dustin Hoffman, a notorious forger and embezzler. Dega believes his wife will secure his release, and Papillon offers to protect him in exchange for financial support in planning an escape.
The two endure the brutal conditions of a jungle labor camp and eventually form a strong friendship. When Papillon defends Dega from a cruel guard, he escapes into the jungle but is later captured and sentenced to two years in solitary confinement. Dega secretly arranges for extra food to be sent to Papillon, but when the smuggling is discovered, the warden attempts to break Papillon’s spirit by keeping him in darkness and reducing his rations. Despite being driven to the brink of insanity and resorting to eating insects, Papillon refuses to betray Dega.
After being released from solitary confinement, Papillon reunites with Dega and devises another escape plan. With the help of an inmate doctor, they arrange for a boat with the assistance of a man named Pascal. Fellow prisoner Clusiot and a gay orderly named André Maturette join the escape. During the attempt, Clusiot is knocked unconscious by a guard, forcing Dega to intervene and ultimately join Papillon and Maturette in their escape. Despite injuring his ankle, Dega perseveres, and the trio successfully flees into the night.
