Description: “Palmer” is a 2021 film that follows the story of Eddie Palmer, a former high school football star who returns home after serving a 12-year prison sentence. He moves in with his grandmother, Vivian, who also occasionally cares for Sam, a young boy with a unique personality. When Vivian passes away, Palmer is unexpectedly thrust into the role of Sam’s temporary guardian, as Sam’s mother, Shelly, is often absent. Working as a janitor at a local school, Palmer begins to bond with Sam and Maggie, Sam’s teacher.
One day, Sam comes home upset after being bullied by his classmates’ fathers for wearing makeup. Palmer confronts one of the fathers at a bar, leading to further complications. Shelly briefly returns to take Sam back, but he is soon placed in the care of Child Protective Services. Palmer seeks guardianship but is denied due to his parole status. However, when Sam is mistreated by Shelly’s abusive boyfriend, Palmer steps in to protect him. Shelly eventually grants Palmer custody, allowing him to become Sam’s guardian.
The film explores Palmer’s journey of redemption as he rebuilds his life and forms an unlikely bond with Sam, whose challenges and interests initially puzzle Palmer.
