The story follows Carl Nargle, the longtime host of Vermont’s most popular painting show, who has enjoyed nearly three decades of success. However, his reign is challenged when the struggling TV station hires Ambrosia, a younger and more talented painter. Ambrosia quickly takes over Carl’s timeslot and his allure among co-workers. After a disastrous fundraising drive, Carl is fired and offered a job teaching painting at a nearby college, but he is too disheartened to continue. His true love, Katherine, steps in, realizing she has wasted her life seeking his approval. Carl, in turn, acknowledges his vanity and foolish behavior. As they confess their love, Carl’s barn accidentally burns down, leading the town to believe he has died. In reality, Carl chooses to live a simple life with Katherine.
