**Storyline:**
In June 1995, the story begins with Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg) performing upside-down crutches at Sun Gym. When he notices the police arriving, he quickly jumps over the bar and attempts to flee, introducing himself with the line, “My name is Daniel Lugo, and I believe in fitness.”
In October 1994, Lugo, a former convict, is hired by Sun Gym owner John Mese (Rob Corddry) to boost membership. Within six weeks, Lugo successfully increases gym membership by 300%. During this time, he befriends Adrian Doorbal (Anthony Mackie), a bodybuilder and trainer who has become impotent due to steroid use. Lugo grows envious of the wealth and lifestyle of Victor Kershaw (Tony Shalhoub), a gym member he trains. Inspired by motivational speaker Jonny Wu (Ken Jeong), Lugo decides to take action and plans to extort Kershaw’s assets through kidnapping and torture.
By January 1995, Lugo recruits Doorbal and Paul Doyle (Dwayne Johnson), another ex-con who has turned to Christianity. Doyle eventually joins the team after being expelled from his halfway house. The group, now known as the “Sun Gym gang,” successfully kidnaps Kershaw after several attempts and takes him to a small warehouse. Though masked, Kershaw recognizes Lugo. The gang forces Kershaw to make calls under duress to explain his disappearance, convinces his family to move out of state, and coerces him into signing documents that transfer his assets to Lugo.
John Mese is bribed to notarize the documents in Kershaw’s absence. While the gang manages to seize Kershaw’s money and assets, they realize releasing him would be risky. Lugo devises a plan to kill Kershaw by making it appear as a drunk driving accident. They force Kershaw to drink alcohol and crash his BMW. However, Kershaw survives the crash, prompting the gang to set the car on fire with him inside. Kershaw escapes the burning vehicle, but the gang runs over him twice and leaves him for dead. Despite the brutal attack, Kershaw survives and is hospitalized.
