Description: Paan Singh Tomar (2012) is a compelling Hindi film that portrays the life of Paan Singh Tomar, an athlete turned dacoit. The story unfolds as a reporter interviews Paan Singh, who has gained notoriety for killing nine people from a community. Through a flashback to 1950, we learn that Paan Singh served in the Army while his family lived in Morena. Despite his initial disinterest in sports, he joined the Army’s sports division due to the freedom it offered in dietary choices. He excelled in athletics, particularly in the 3000-meter steeplechase, which his coach encouraged him to pursue.
Paan Singh dominated the Indian National Games, winning gold in the steeplechase for seven consecutive years. In 1958, he competed in the Asian Games in Tokyo but failed to win due to issues with his track spikes, which were only provided during the final event. His frustration grew when he was prohibited from participating in the 1962 and 1965 wars, as athletes were barred from combat. However, he redeemed himself by winning gold at the International Military Games in 1967.
The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Paan Singh’s brother informs him that their land is being unlawfully taken by a relative, Bhanwar Singh. Deciding to retire from the Army, Paan Singh returns to his village to resolve the dispute, despite being offered a coaching position. His attempts to seek justice through the District Collector and local police prove futile. Matters escalate when Bhanwar Singh and his men severely beat Paan Singh’s son, prompting him to send his son away to join the Army for safety. Eventually, Bhanwar Singh and his gang attempt to kill Paan Singh and his family, leading to a tragic and intense confrontation.
