Description: One night in Indiana, RJ the raccoon attempts to steal snack food stockpiled by Vincent, a bear, for his hibernation. Vincent awakens, catches RJ, and during the confrontation, the food is destroyed. Vincent warns RJ that if the food isn’t replaced by the end of his hibernation in a week, he will hunt and eat him.
A family of woodland animals, including Verne, the ornate box turtle and leader, Hammy the hyperactive American red squirrel, Stella the striped skunk, Lou and Penny the North American porcupine parents, their children Spike, Bucky, and Quillo, and Ozzie and Heather, the Virginia opossum father and daughter, emerge from hibernation on the first day of spring. They discover that much of their forest has been replaced by a housing development, separated from the remaining forest by a massive hedge. The animals worry about how they will gather enough food for the upcoming winter.
RJ persuades them to cross the hedge and steal food from humans. Despite Verne’s reservations, the animals agree, unaware that RJ plans to give the food to Vincent. Gladys Sharp, the neighborhood Home Owners Association president, notices the animal activity and hires exterminator Dwayne LaFontant to eliminate them.
When the exterminator arrives, Verne decides to return the stolen food to the humans. RJ tries to stop him, but they encounter a playful dog named Nugent, who accidentally pulls the food wagon through the neighborhood, ultimately causing it to crash into Gladys’ SUV and explode.
RJ blames Verne for losing the food, while Verne criticizes the others for trusting RJ and endangering themselves. During a heated argument, RJ inadvertently insults the family, leading them to abandon him in favor of Verne.
