Description: Outlaws, a 2021 film originally titled “Las leyes de la frontera” (The Laws of the Frontier), is based on a 2012 novel of the same name. The story unfolds in 1978 Catalonia, Spain, and revolves around a tight-knit group of petty criminals and a young man who becomes part of their world. Inspired by the Spanish Quinqui genre, which emerged in the 1970s as a offshoot of the French New Wave, the film explores themes of youthful rebellion, fast living, and reckless romance.
The protagonist, Ignacio “Nacho” Canas (Marcos Ruiz), lives in Girona, where he faces constant bullying and taunts from local boys. Seeking solace, he frequents the arcade to play pinball. It is here that he meets Tere (Begoña Vargas) and El Zarco (Chechu Salgado), whose carefree and daring lifestyles starkly contrast with Nacho’s mundane family life.
Tere and Zarco lead a group of misfits involved in minor criminal activities, and Nacho is quickly drawn into their world. Together, they steal cars, raid suburban homes for valuables, and rob pharmacies to sell amphetamines to hippies. For Nacho, the thrill of these adventures brings a newfound confidence and a sense of belonging. However, their exploits attract the attention of two police inspectors, who begin closing in on the group. Amid the chaos, Nacho grows closer to Tere, even as her relationship with Zarco complicates matters. The film captures the allure of rebellion and the consequences that follow.
