Description: In 1304, outside the besieged Stirling Castle, Scottish nobles John Comyn, Robert Bruce, and others surrender to Edward I of England. In exchange for their loyalty, Edward promises to return their lands. After the formalities, Bruce spars with the Prince of Wales, and Edward arranges Bruce’s marriage to Elizabeth de Burgh. Lord James Douglas requests the return of his ancestral lands but is dismissed by Edward due to his father’s treason. The King and Prince leave Scotland under the supervision of Aymer de Valence, with Comyn and Bruce tasked with managing the region. Elizabeth arrives for her wedding, and Bruce respects her reluctance to consummate the marriage. Witnessing English soldiers conscripting his servants, Bruce grows discontented. After his father’s death, Bruce reflects on his father’s regret for trusting Edward.
While delivering taxes in Berwick, Bruce observes the growing resentment toward English rule, fueled by the public display of William Wallace’s quartered body. Inspired, Bruce plans a revolt and seeks support from his family and Comyn. When Comyn refuses and threatens to expose the plan, Bruce kills him in a panic. The Scottish clergy, seeking to counteract English influence, offers Bruce a pardon in exchange for his support of the Catholic Church and his acceptance of the Scottish crown. Bruce agrees, but Edward declares him an outlaw and sends his son, the Prince of Wales, to crush the rebellion under a dragon banner, symbolizing the order to show no mercy.
