The story begins with a spacecraft crash-landing in a lake during the Vendel era in Scandinavia (550-790). Shortly after, the alien discovers a destroyed village and is captured by Wulfric (Jack Huston), a warrior from a neighboring village.
Wulfric takes the alien to the fortified village of King Hrothgar (John Hurt), who is the father of Freya (Sophia Myles). Hrothgar is concerned that Gunnar (Ron Perlman), the chieftain of the destroyed village, will blame Wulfric for the attack. The alien, who identifies himself as Kainan (Jim Caviezel), claims to be from the north and states he is hunting a dragon. That night, the village is attacked by a mysterious creature, which Kainan identifies as a Moorwen—a deadly predator responsible for his ship’s crash.
As the Moorwen continues its rampage, Kainan joins a hunting party and kills a massive bear, earning the respect of the villagers. Meanwhile, Freya begins to develop feelings for Kainan, who reveals the tragic backstory of the Moorwen. Kainan explains that his people invaded the Moorwen’s planet, slaughtered its species, and established a colony. The last surviving Moorwen retaliated by wiping out the colony, including Kainan’s family, and later caused the crash of his ship.
To protect the village, Kainan devises a plan to lure the Moorwen into a trap. The film blends action, mythology, and science fiction, creating an engaging narrative filled with suspense and emotional depth.
