Description: In 1967, amidst the Kisangani Mutinies, a lethal virus known as Motaba, causing a deadly fever, is uncovered in the African jungle. To conceal the virus, U.S. Army officers Donald McClintock and Billy Ford destroy the infected camp. Fast forward twenty-eight years, Colonel Sam Daniels, a virologist with USAMRIID, is dispatched to investigate an outbreak in Zaire. Alongside Lieutenant Colonel Casey Schuler and Major Salt, he gathers information and returns to the U.S. Ford, now a brigadier general and Daniels’ superior, dismisses concerns about the virus spreading.
A white-headed capuchin monkey carrying the virus is smuggled into the country. Jimbo Scott, an animal testing lab worker, is infected after stealing the monkey to sell on the black market. Failing to sell it to pet-store owner Rudy Alvarez in Cedar Creek, California, Jimbo releases the monkey in nearby woods. He later develops symptoms on a flight to Boston, infecting his girlfriend, Alice. Their illness is examined by Dr. Roberta Keough, a CDC scientist and Daniels’ ex-wife. Despite the deaths of Jimbo, Alice, and Rudy, Keough confirms no further infections in Boston.
In Cedar Creek, a hospital technician becomes infected after accidentally breaking a vial of Rudy’s blood. The virus mutates into an airborne strain, rapidly spreading in a movie theater. Defying orders, Daniels heads to Cedar Creek, joining Keough’s team to search for the monkey. As the Army quarantines the town and enforces martial law, Schuler is infected due to a tear in his suit, and Keough accidentally contaminates herself with a needle while treating him.
