**Storyline:**
Joan and Tom Thompson have shared a long and loving marriage, maintaining a peaceful household and following their daily routines. Their relationship is marked by a deep bond, expressed through both tenderness and humor. While Tom cherishes his pet fish, Joan is indifferent to it. Together, they enjoy long walks through town, always turning back when they reach a newly planted sapling.
One evening, Joan discovers a lump in her breast while showering. She and Tom rush to the hospital, where she is diagnosed with breast cancer. Joan’s doctor schedules surgery to remove the tumor and surrounding lymph nodes. On the day of the operation, Tom visits the grave of their late daughter, Debbie, and confesses his fear of losing his wife and being left alone.
The surgery is successful, and the doctors confirm that all visible signs of cancer have been removed. However, Joan is referred to an oncologist to begin chemotherapy. This leads to a disagreement between Joan and Tom about what it truly means to be “cancer-free.” Meanwhile, Tom grieves the death of his pet fish, overwhelmed with emotion as he flushes it down the toilet.
While waiting for her chemotherapy session, Joan encounters Peter, her daughter’s former school teacher, who reveals he is battling terminal cancer. Joan undergoes her first chemotherapy treatment but suffers severe side effects, including intense vomiting.
As her hair begins to fall out, Tom steps in, first cutting her hair short and then shaving her head completely. The strain of the illness leads to a heated argument between the couple, with Joan accusing cancer of ruining their marriage. Later, Joan meets Peter at a café, where they openly discuss their mortality. In a moment of vulnerability, Joan removes her wig, embracing her true self.
Outside the chemotherapy clinic, Tom meets a man smoking on a bench. The man, who is also a terminal cancer patient, offers reassurance that Joan’s life can still be saved by the doctors.
