Description: In 1950, shortly after North Korean forces seized control of much of South Korea, an American-led UN coalition was deployed to assist the struggling South Koreans. General Douglas MacArthur devised a secret plan to launch an attack behind enemy lines at the port city of Incheon. Facing opposition from other military leaders, MacArthur initiated a covert operation called “X-Ray” to gather critical intelligence from within occupied Incheon.
The mission centered on Captain Jang Hak-Soo, a South Korean naval intelligence officer and former North Korean army defector, along with seven members of the X-Ray unit. Disguised as a North Korean inspection team, they infiltrated the enemy’s command center in Incheon, led by Soviet-trained Commander Lim Gye-Jin, a close associate of North Korean leader Kim Il-Sung. Their primary objectives were to identify enemy defenses, such as mines and artillery, and assess the challenging tidal conditions of Incheon Harbor to secure a lighthouse crucial for the planned amphibious landing.
Suspicious of Jang’s mission, Lim ordered his staff to closely monitor the team. Under pressure from the U.S. command to provide navigation charts and devise a strategy for the assault, Jang and his team raced against time to complete their mission. Meanwhile, in Tokyo, MacArthur prepared Operation Chromite, mobilizing 75,000 UN troops and over 200 warships for the impending invasion of the Korean Peninsula.
