Description: Seymour “Sy” Parrish works as a photo technician at a one-hour photo lab in the large SavMart store. He lives a solitary life, with no friends or romantic relationships, and his only purpose seems to be his job, which he views as a crucial service. Over the years, Sy has grown particularly attached to the Yorkin family, whom he has been developing photos for. His obsession with them leads him to secretly copy their photos and display them in his home. Despite his attempts to get closer to the family, his shyness and social awkwardness result in gentle rejections.
Sy manages to connect briefly with Nina Yorkin after pretending to take an interest in a book she purchased. Nina realizes that Sy lives a lonely life, something only her son Jake had previously noticed. Soon after, Sy is fired from his job when his manager, Bill, discovers that he has been printing extra photos without payment, spacing out at work, taking excessively long breaks, giving Jake a free disposable camera, and getting into an argument with a maintenance worker. Sy is told to leave by the end of the week.
While processing a customer’s photos, Sy uncovers evidence that Will Yorkin is having an affair, shattering his idealized image of the Yorkin family. He secretly includes photos of Will and his mistress, Maya Burson, in a batch of photos Nina is supposed to pick up. Sy also begins following Bill’s daughter, taking paparazzi-style pictures of her, which are discovered by another employee, Yoshi. Yoshi reports the photos to Bill, prompting a police investigation into Sy’s actions.
