By 1990, she struggles to find success and ends up working as a waitress in a Mexican restaurant, where she meets Ian, an aspiring comedian. Meanwhile, Dexter travels the world but stays in touch with Emma. In 1991, he visits her and suggests they take a holiday together. They go to France in 1992, but despite their mutual attraction, Emma rejects Dexter’s advances.
By 1993, Dexter has become a famous television presenter, known for his wild lifestyle. In 1994, his mother is diagnosed with terminal cancer, and Dexter visits his parents, arriving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. His father is furious, and his mother expresses disappointment in his behavior, telling him he has yet to mature. That same year, Emma goes on a date with Ian, and despite their lack of chemistry, they start a relationship.
In 1995, Emma works as a school teacher and lives with Ian, though she becomes increasingly frustrated with his lack of ambition. Dexter’s new television show earns him a reputation as “the most annoying man on TV.” During a dinner on July 15, 1996, Dexter behaves obnoxiously under the influence of cocaine, flirts with another woman, and insults Emma. Hurt and angry, she confronts him, saying that while she loves him, she no longer likes him.
By 1999, Dexter’s television career has collapsed, and he is in a serious relationship with Sylvie. Emma, meanwhile, has ended her relationship with Ian, who confronts her about their breakup and his jealousy of Dexter after reading her diary. Before leaving, Ian encourages Emma to publish the stories from her diary.
On July 15, 2000, Dexter and Emma attend the wedding of mutual friends, marking another chapter in their complicated relationship. The film explores the evolving bond between the two characters, filled with love, frustration, and missed opportunities.
