Description: In the 2010 film “Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai,” the story begins in March 1993 in Bombay, where Assistant Commissioner of Police Agnel Wilson attempts suicide following the devastating Bombay bombings. During questioning by his superior, Wilson confesses that the tragic events were his fault, tracing the blame back to his inaction 18 years earlier when he served in the Mumbai crime branch. His failure to act allowed the rise of Shoaib Khan, a feared gangster who played a key role in the bombings.
The film unfolds through Wilson’s narration, recounting the Mumbai underworld of the 1970s. At the time, the city was controlled by Sultan Mirza, a well-meaning smuggler. Mirza’s eventual downfall paved the way for Shoaib’s ascent to power.
The story also explores Mirza’s early life. After losing his home in Madras to a flood, he moves to Mumbai and starts working as a coal shoveler. Despite his modest income, Mirza earns the community’s respect by consistently helping the poor and needy, earning the nickname “Sultan.”
As an adult, Mirza becomes the dominant figure in Mumbai’s smuggling underworld during the 1970s. He divides the city’s illegal activities among four gangsters, creating a system that hinders police efforts. Although a criminal, Mirza is depicted as a principled figure with a generous heart, earning him a godfather-like reputation among the people. He avoids smuggling contraband, staying true to his Muslim faith.
In contrast, Shoaib is shown as ambitious and ruthless from a young age, often involved in petty theft. His father, Hussain Khan, a sub-inspector with the Bombay Police, struggles to guide his son. Shoaib’s rebellious nature and criminal tendencies create tension in their relationship, particularly after an incident where Shoaib and his friend Javed are caught stealing.
