Description: In the late 19th century during China’s Qing dynasty, foreign imperialism is eroding Chinese sovereignty. To restore national pride, Empress Dowager Cixi and Li Hongzhang organize a lion dance competition to showcase Chinese martial arts. Participants from across the country compete for the title of “Lion Dance King.”
Wong Fei-hung travels by train from Foshan to Beijing with his romantic interest, 13th Aunt, and his apprentice, Leung Foon, to meet his father, Wong Kei-ying, at the Cantonese Ten Tigers Association. At the train station, 13th Aunt encounters Tomanovsky, a Russian diplomat and her former classmate from her studies in Britain. Tomanovsky’s attempts to gain her attention irritate Wong, who is particularly displeased by the Western custom of hand-kissing. Upon arriving at the Association, Wong learns that his father was attacked by Chiu Tin-bak, a wealthy rival martial artist, and his henchman, Clubfoot. Fortunately, Wong Kei-ying suffered only minor injuries. Observing the romantic bond between his son and 13th Aunt, he gives them his blessing.
Before the official competition begins, the lion dance troupes in Beijing are already clashing among themselves, holding their own unofficial contests. Wong chooses to observe rather than participate, unaware that Leung and his friends have secretly joined the competition for fun. A confrontation arises when Leung provokes Clubfoot during the contest, leading to a chase. During the scuffle, Leung accidentally releases a stampede of horses from a stable, crushing Clubfoot’s legs. Abandoned by Chiu, who deems him useless, Clubfoot is taken in by Wong, who heals his injuries. Initially hostile, Clubfoot is moved by Wong’s kindness and becomes his devoted apprentice.
