The story begins with three thugs searching for a target in a Chinese theater. The owners alert a man named “Noodles,” who ignores the warning. A flashback reveals Noodles witnessing the removal of three mutilated bodies by the police. Despite killing one of his pursuers, Noodles discovers his girlfriend, Eve, has been murdered and his money stolen, prompting him to flee the city.
Set in 1918, the film follows David “Noodles” Aaronson, a street kid in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Alongside his friends—Patrick “Patsy” Goldberg, Philip “Cockeye” Stein, and Dominic—they engage in petty crimes under the guidance of local boss Bugsy. Their plans are disrupted by Maximillian “Max” Bercovicz, who outsmarts them during a robbery attempt. Noodles confronts Max, but a corrupt officer intervenes, leading to a tense encounter.
Max, Noodles, and their gang eventually break away from Bugsy and begin their own operations, hiding their earnings in a suitcase stored at a railway station. Noodles harbors feelings for Deborah, the sister of their trusted friend, “Fat” Moe Gelly. Tragedy strikes when Bugsy ambushes the gang, resulting in Dominic’s death. Consumed by rage, Noodles retaliates and is arrested, serving time in prison.
Released in 1930, Noodles reunites with his gang, now successful bootleggers during Prohibition. He also reconnects with Deborah, hoping to revive their relationship. The gang’s success grows as they align with union boss Jimmy Conway O’Donnell, but their fortunes take complex turns.
The film explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and ambition, weaving a compelling narrative of crime and survival.
