Description: “Once Upon a Time in China,” released in 1991, is set in Foshan during the late 19th century under the Qing dynasty. The story follows Wong Fei-hung, a martial arts instructor and traditional Chinese medicine practitioner. After witnessing a lion dance performance disrupted by French sailors, Wong is given a hand fan inscribed with China’s unequal treaties with foreign powers, symbolizing the nation’s struggles.
Wong manages his clinic, Po-chi-lam, with the help of his three apprentices. He encounters Siu-kwan, known as “13th Aunt,” whom he addresses respectfully despite their similar age due to her senior family standing. Though they develop romantic feelings, societal norms hinder their relationship.
Meanwhile, Leung Foon arrives in Foshan with an opera troupe and becomes infatuated with 13th Aunt. He clashes with the Shaho Gang, a group terrorizing local businesses. During a confrontation between the gang and Wong’s militia, Wong defeats the gang’s leader. However, authorities release the leader due to a lack of witnesses willing to testify. This reflects the challenges Wong faces in upholding justice in a corrupt and turbulent society.
