Description: In 2007, the movie “Once” follows the story of a Dublin-based busker in his thirties who plays guitar on Grafton Street. When a man steals his earnings, he chases after him. A young Czech flower seller, captivated by his music, strikes up a conversation about his songs. Discovering he repairs vacuum cleaners, she asks him to fix hers. The next day, she brings her broken vacuum and reveals she is also a musician.
At a local music store, the busker teaches her one of his songs, “Falling Slowly,” and they perform it together. Later, he takes her to his father’s shop and, on their way home, shares a song about his ex-girlfriend who betrayed him and left.
When he invites her to stay the night, she becomes upset and leaves, but they reconcile the next day. Over the course of a week, they collaborate on writing, rehearsing, and recording songs. She writes lyrics for one of his compositions, “If You Want Me,” and they perform at a party.
The busker works on a song titled “Lies,” inspired by his ex, who now lives in London. Encouraged by the flower seller, he decides to win her back. However, upon visiting her, he discovers she has a child and lives with her mother. Determined to move to London, he plans to record a demo and asks the flower seller to join him.
As they prepare to record, he learns she has a husband back in the Czech Republic. When he questions her feelings, she responds in Czech, “Miluji tebe” (“I love you”), but refuses to translate it. Despite this, they proceed to record with a band they’ve assembled from fellow street musicians.
“Once” is a heartfelt tale of music, connection, and unspoken emotions.
