Shyamalan chose to adapt Sandcastle into a film after receiving it as a Father’s Day gift in 2017. The project was announced in September 2019, with Universal Pictures as the production partner. Filming took place in the Dominican Republic over three months during the COVID-19 pandemic, with cinematographer Michael Gioulakis. Old premiered at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City on July 19, 2021, and was released theatrically in the United States on July 23. Despite mixed critical reviews, it was a commercial success, earning $90.1 million globally against an $18 million budget.
The plot centers on married couple Guy and Prisca Cappa, who are navigating a divorce. To avoid upsetting their young children, Maddox and Trent, they take them on a final family vacation to a tropical resort. At the hotel, the family is invited to a secluded beach, where they encounter other guests, including a rapper named “Mid-Sized Sedan,” a surgeon named Charles with his family, and another couple, Jarin and Patricia Carmichael. As the day unfolds, the group discovers that the beach is causing them to age at an alarming rate—equivalent to one year every 30 minutes. Each family member faces their own medical challenges, and attempts to escape result in unconsciousness. The film explores their harrowing struggle to survive and uncover the truth behind the mysterious phenomenon.
