Description: In 2007, Lucy Mirando, an “environmentalist,” takes over as CEO of the Mirando Corporation, replacing her twin sister. She reveals that the company has been breeding a unique “super pig” and sends 26 specimens to farmers worldwide. A decade later, one of these pigs will be crowned the best.
By 2017, a young girl named Mija lives in South Korea with her grandfather and their super pig, Okja. The two share a close bond, spending most of their time together, and Okja even saves Mija from a cliff fall. When Mirando’s zoologist, Dr. Johnny Wilcox, visits and declares Okja the best super pig, he announces plans to take her to New York City. Mija’s grandfather gives her a gold pig, explaining he saved it to replace Okja once she’s gone. Heartbroken, Mija travels to Seoul to rescue Okja, who is already being transported.
During the chaos, the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) intercepts the truck, helping Mija and Okja escape. Jay, the ALF leader, explains they plan to implant a recording device in Okja’s ear and let her be recaptured to expose the Mirando Corporation’s mistreatment of animals. Mija asks to return Okja to the mountains, but ALF member K mistranslates her request, claiming she agrees. Okja is recaptured, and Mija is left devastated.
To manage the company’s image, Lucy arranges for Mija to reunite with Okja in New York City. However, Okja is subjected to harsh experiments, including forced breeding and tissue extraction for taste tests. After witnessing the cruelty, K admits he lied about Mija’s consent, leading Jay to expel him from the ALF.
The story highlights the bond between Mija and Okja while exposing the dark practices of corporate greed and animal exploitation.
