**Storyline:**
Peter Gibbons is a dissatisfied and unmotivated programmer employed at Initech. Alongside his colleagues, Samir Nagheenanajar and Michael Bolton (who dislikes being associated with the famous singer sharing his name), Peter endures the frustrations of corporate life. Milton Waddams, a timid and overlooked office worker, also shares the workspace. The employees struggle under incompetent and indifferent management, particularly from Vice President Bill Lumbergh, whom Peter despises but avoids confronting.
Encouraged by his girlfriend Anne, Peter attends a hypnotherapy session with Dr. Swanson. However, during the session, the therapist suffers a fatal heart attack before fully awakening Peter from his hypnotic state. The next day, Peter sleeps through work, ignoring calls from both Lumbergh and Anne. Anne eventually breaks up with him, confirming his suspicions of her infidelity.
Peter begins a new relationship with Joanna, a waitress who shares his disdain for management. Joanna faces her own workplace challenges, as her boss demands she wear more “pieces of flair” (decorative buttons) than the required minimum.
Meanwhile, Initech hires two consultants, Bob Slydell and Bob Porter (“the Bobs”), to streamline the company through layoffs. Upon returning to work, Peter defies office norms by violating the dress code and dismantling cubicle walls to improve his view. Impressed by his candid observations, the Bobs promote him despite Lumbergh’s objections. However, Michael and Samir are fired, and Milton, who had unknowingly been terminated years earlier, continues to be mistreated, including having his beloved red Swingline stapler confiscated and his desk repeatedly relocated.
