Description: The film “Oculus” (2013) unfolds across two timelines: the present and events from 11 years prior, interwoven through flashbacks.
In 2002, software engineer Alan Russell relocates to a new home with his wife Marie and their children, 10-year-old Tim and 12-year-old Kaylie. Alan buys an antique mirror to adorn his office, unaware of its supernatural ability to induce hallucinations. Marie begins to experience terrifying visions of her body decaying, while Alan becomes entranced by a spectral woman named Marisol Chavez, who has mirrors for eyes.
In 2013, Tim is released from a psychiatric hospital, convinced that no supernatural forces were responsible for his parents’ deaths. Meanwhile, Kaylie, now an adult, has dedicated years to researching the mirror’s dark history. Using her position at an auction house, she retrieves the mirror and sets it up in their childhood home, surrounded by surveillance equipment and a fail-safe mechanism designed to destroy it. Her goal is to expose the mirror’s powers to prove Tim’s innocence.
Back in 2002, the family’s life deteriorates as the parents succumb to madness. Alan isolates himself in his office, while Marie grows increasingly paranoid. The household plants die, and the family dog mysteriously vanishes after being locked in the office with the mirror. After witnessing her father with Marisol, Kaylie informs her mother, sparking a violent confrontation. One night, Marie snaps and tries to kill her children, but Alan intervenes and locks her away.
The story alternates between these timelines, building tension as the family battles the mirror’s malevolent influence.
