Description: The movie “November Criminals” (2017) begins with nostalgic footage of young Addison Schacht and his mother enjoying a day at the beach. A voiceover reveals that Addison’s mother passed away from an aneurysm six months before the events of the film.
In the present day, teenage Addison is submitting his application to the University of Chicago, accompanied by his friend Phoebe Zeleny. After dropping off the application, the two visit a local bakery for coffee. There, they meet Kevin Broadus, a mutual friend who works at the bakery. As Addison and Phoebe leave, Phoebe confesses that she is still a virgin and suggests they lose their virginity together before heading off to college. Addison agrees, and the pair go to Phoebe’s house. Shortly after, an armed motorcyclist arrives at the bakery and storms inside.
Phoebe’s mother later calls to inform her about a shooting at the bakery, where Kevin was tragically killed. Addison returns home but stops by the bakery, now a crime scene, to learn more. A cameraman tells him the shooting was likely gang-related, which confuses Addison since Kevin didn’t seem the type to be involved in such activities.
Frustrated by the authorities’ dismissive attitude and the school’s effort to move on, Addison decides to investigate Kevin’s death himself. He posts flyers around the school seeking information and even steals Kevin’s file from the school records. From the file, Addison and Phoebe discover that Kevin had been seeing a counselor due to emotional detachment.
At lunch one day, a witness to the shooting reveals that the shooter was white, contrary to the police report, and mentions that Kevin had been spending time with a former student named Noel. Addison’s investigation leads to him being suspended for a week after school administrators find Kevin’s stolen file in his locker.
