Description: In the typical high school setting of John Hughes High in Southern California, Priscilla, the head cheerleader, breaks up with her football star boyfriend, Jake Wyler, who is also a slacker. To get back at him, she starts dating the shy and awkward Les. One of Jake’s friends, Austin, bets him that he can transform Janey Briggs, a uniquely rebellious and nerdy girl, into the prom queen. Janey, however, resists Jake’s efforts because she is confident and doesn’t feel the need to change. Despite her initial indifference, Jake continues to pursue her.
As Jake tries to win Janey over, he faces challenges from his sister, Catherine, who has inappropriate feelings for him; Janey’s best friend and secret admirer, Ricky Lipman; and his own troubled past as a football player. Catherine eventually helps Jake by drastically changing Janey’s appearance—simply by removing her glasses and ponytail—which instantly transforms her into a stunning beauty.
Meanwhile, Janey’s younger brother, Mitch, along with his friends Ox and Bruce, make a pact to lose their virginity before graduation, even though they are only freshmen. Mitch tries to impress his longtime crush, Amanda Becker, with a love letter, but Bruce dismisses his chances, telling him to keep dreaming.
As prom approaches, Jake’s reputation suffers due to his failure to lead the football team to victory in the previous year’s state championship. Austin tricks Jake into revealing the bet to Janey, pretending to whisper it in her ear. This upsets Janey, and she leaves in tears. On prom night, Austin accompanies Janey, leaving Jake jealous. Catherine and Jake engage in a dance-off with Austin and Janey, during which Catherine dances provocatively. Overwhelmed, Janey runs off crying.
