The story follows Roger Thornhill, an advertising executive mistaken for a man named George Kaplan. In 1958, Thornhill is kidnapped by thugs in a New York City hotel and taken to a Long Island estate owned by a man named Lester Townsend. There, he is interrogated by a spy named Phillip Vandamm, who ignores Thornhill’s denials and arranges for his staged death in a fake drunk driving accident. Thornhill survives but is arrested for drunken driving. Unable to convince his mother or the police of his innocence, Thornhill is taken back to Townsend’s home, where a woman claims he showed up drunk at her dinner party and identifies Townsend as a U.N. diplomat. Thornhill and his mother visit Kaplan’s hotel room, where they find no trace of him. As Thornhill answers a call from the thugs, he escapes and heads to the U.N. General Assembly building to confront Townsend. However, Townsend is not the man Thornhill met earlier, and one of the thugs kills him, framing Thornhill for the murder. Forced to flee, Thornhill begins a quest to find the elusive Kaplan. Meanwhile, a government intelligence agency realizes Thornhill has been mistaken for their fabricated agent, Kaplan, but chooses not to save him to avoid compromising their operation. Thornhill’s journey includes a dramatic encounter with a crop duster and a chance meeting with Eve Kendall on a train to Chicago. Kendall helps Thornhill evade the police, but she is secretly working with Vandamm. Later, she arranges a meeting with Kaplan at a remote bus stop, further entangling Thornhill in a web of deception and danger.
