Rumors suggested it stood for “Not Of Planet Earth” or “Not Our Planet Earth,” but Peele clarified that it represents the reaction he aimed to evoke from viewers.
Filming took place in northern Los Angeles County during the fall of 2021, concluding in November. The movie premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on July 18, 2022, and was officially released in the United States on July 22, 2022, by Universal Pictures. It earned $92 million and garnered praise for its creativity, ambition, performances, cinematography, and direction, though the screenplay divided critics.
The film also includes a subplot set in 1998 on the soundstage of the sitcom “Gordy’s Home,” where a chimpanzee actor attacks and injures its co-stars after being startled. The youngest actor, Ricky “Jupe” Park, survives unharmed but is deeply traumatized by the event.
In the present-day storyline, Otis Haywood Sr., a ranch owner who trains horses for film and television, dies mysteriously when a nickel falls from the sky and strikes him. His children, Otis “OJ” Haywood Jr. and Emerald “Em” Haywood, inherit the ranch. While OJ works to preserve their father’s legacy, Em pursues fame and fortune in Hollywood.
