**Storyline:**
In 2011, Fern loses her job after the US Gypsum plant in Empire, Nevada, closes down. She had worked there for years alongside her late husband. Deciding to sell most of her belongings, Fern buys a van to live in and travels across the country in search of work. During the winter, she takes on a seasonal job at an Amazon fulfillment center.
A friend and co-worker named Linda invites Fern to visit a desert gathering in Arizona, organized by Bob Wells, which offers a support system and community for nomads. Initially hesitant, Fern eventually attends as the weather turns cold and work becomes scarce. At the gathering, she meets other nomads and learns essential survival and self-sufficiency skills for life on the road.
When Fern’s van gets a flat tire, she approaches a nearby nomad named Swankie for help. Swankie criticizes Fern’s lack of preparedness but invites her to learn more road survival skills, and the two become close friends. Swankie shares her cancer diagnosis and her decision to spend her remaining time making memories on the road rather than in a hospital. They eventually part ways.
Later, Fern works as a camp host at an RV park, where she reunites with David, another nomad she had met at the desert gathering. David is temporarily working at Badlands National Park but falls ill and requires emergency surgery. After his recovery, they take jobs together at Wall Drug in South Dakota. One evening, David’s son visits, informing him of his wife’s pregnancy and inviting him to meet his grandchild. Though hesitant, David is encouraged by Fern to go, but she declines his offer to join him.
