Description: Susan Morrow, an art gallery owner, receives a manuscript of a novel written by her estranged ex-husband, Edward Sheffield, along with an invitation to dinner during his upcoming visit to Los Angeles. Struggling with her failing marriage to Hutton Morrow, an unfaithful businessman, Susan becomes deeply engrossed in the novel, which is dedicated to her and titled *Nocturnal Animals*—a nickname Edward once used for her.
The novel tells the story of Tony Hastings, a family man who encounters three troublemakers—Ray Marcus, Lou, and Turk—during a road trip through West Texas. After being forced off the road, Tony is helpless as Ray and Turk kidnap his wife, Laura, and daughter, India, leaving him with Lou. Lou forces Tony to drive Ray’s car to a remote location where he is abandoned. Tony manages to escape when Ray and Lou return for him and seeks help from a nearby farmhouse to contact the police.
Detective Roberto “Bobby” Andes takes on the case and, with Tony’s help, discovers the bodies of Laura and India in an abandoned shack, where they were brutally raped and murdered. Overwhelmed with guilt, Tony is contacted a year later by Andes, who asks him to identify Lou, an accomplice in the murders. Turk has already been killed in a robbery, leaving Ray as the last culprit. Andes arrests Ray but is forced to release him due to lack of evidence. Determined to seek justice before his retirement and facing terminal lung cancer, Andes takes matters into his own hands. With Tony’s assistance, he abducts Ray and Lou. While Lou is shot dead during an escape attempt, Ray manages to flee.
