Description: The 2007 film “No Smoking” tells the story of a man who wakes up in a run-down house in an unfamiliar location. He receives a call from his wife, who asks where he is, but he cannot pinpoint his whereabouts. Desperate for a cigarette, he searches the house and accidentally stumbles upon a room filled with Russian soldiers. One of them chases him and shoots him in the leg. In a desperate attempt to escape, he jumps into a bathtub and wakes up there. The man is revealed to be K (played by John Abraham), a wealthy businessman in his 30s who is confident, narcissistic, and deeply addicted to smoking.
K smokes incessantly—whether at work, at home, or even during intimate moments. Despite pleas from his friends and family to quit, he remains unyielding. His friend Abbas (Ranvir Shorey) and his doctor (Kiku Sharda) suggest he attend a rehabilitation center called ‘Prayogshaala’ (‘The Laboratory’), which they claim will help him overcome his addiction. K reluctantly agrees after his wife, Anjali (Ayesha Takia), leaves him due to the strain his smoking has put on their relationship.
Upon visiting Prayogshaala, K meets its eccentric leader, Shri Shri Prakash Guru Ghantal Baba Bengali Sealdahwale (Paresh Rawal). The center operates under the guise of a carpet business called ‘Kalkatta Karpets,’ and its labyrinthine structure adds to its mysterious atmosphere. The treatment methods at Prayogshaala rely on fear and psychological manipulation, with severe consequences for patients who give in to their cravings. Initially hesitant, K is coerced into signing a contract and paying a hefty fee of ₹21,11,110 to begin his treatment. The story explores his journey as he confronts his addiction in this unconventional and unsettling environment.
